Koreatown, Los Angeles

Korean home cooking, the way it is made at home

A small kitchen on West 6th Street where the dumplings are folded by hand, the banchan keeps coming, and the fish is the reason people keep driving back.

Our kitchen

Made the long way round

Mapo Kkak Doo Gee cooks hansik gajeongsik, Korean home cooking. Not the polished restaurant version of it, the everyday version: stews that sit on the stove, fish grilled to order, kimchi cut in the back, and a spread of banchan that gets refilled without you asking.

The dumplings are folded here, by hand, in the dining room. Guests notice. One review put it plainly: they make their own dumplings because they insist on good food from good ingredients.

The kitchen is run by the ahjummas, and regulars describe the room the way you would describe going to your parents' house for dinner. That is the whole idea.

It feels like eating at an old neighborhood spot, and I love that.

What people order

The ones they come back for

Ask a regular and the same handful of plates come up every time. The full menu runs to 37 dishes, but start here.

A platter of spicy stir fried squid with peppers and onion
Stone pot bibimbap topped with a fried egg and seaweed, surrounded by side dishes
05

은대구조림

Braised Codfish

The dish people name first. Black cod braised down with radish, carrot, onion and chili until the fish falls apart. One guest orders two at a time.

03

가재미구이

Grilled Sole

Called out by a five year regular as the house specialty. Grilled to order, served whole.

19

알찌게

Broiled pollack fish egg stew

A Koreatown classic done properly. Rich, hot and not for the faint hearted.

26

설렁탕

Ox Bone Soup

Milky, slow simmered and gentle. A reviewer rates it above the well known seolleongtang houses nearby.

07

오징어볶음

Stir-fried Squid & Vegetables

Squid, peppers and onion in a bright chili sauce. Order rice and let it soak.

15

떡만두국

Dumpling Soup with Rice Cake

Made with the dumplings folded here that morning. Clean, hot and quietly the best thing on a cold day.

The table

The banchan is not an afterthought

Every meal arrives surrounded by side dishes, and they get topped up as fast as you finish them. Guests keep saying the same thing: it is hard for every single side dish to be good, and here they are.

Every banchan has real savoriness and texture. I have been to a lot of good restaurants in LA, but Mapo Kkak Doo Gee is the best.

Kimchi is made in house. When a fresh batch of pogi kimchi is cut, they sell it by the tub. Call ahead if you want some.

To go

Packed to travel

Everything on the menu goes out for takeout, banchan included, packed so it does not spill. One guest drove twenty minutes home and said the food was still piping hot. Delivery is available too.

Korean home cooking with barely any MSG. It is hard for even the side dishes to all be good, but every single banchan has real savoriness and texture. My husband always orders two of their braised black cod. The ladies are so kind every time we go that it feels like visiting my own parents. I have been to a lot of good restaurants in LA, but Mapo Kkak Doo Gee is the best.

You get the taste of your mother's cooking, which is hard to find even in Korea. The owners are so warm. They look after you with barley tea, banchan and soup, and they make their own dumplings because they insist on good food from good ingredients, so I went back the next day for tteok mandu guk and it was delicious.

Kind owners, a warm room, and food that makes you think of home cooking. The budae jjigae is delicious and the acorn noodles are cool and tangy and wake your appetite right up. Every last side dish is good. The real thing.

The ahjummas that run the restaurant are a family and always welcome you with open arms and the friendliest service. The ambiance is very cozy and comfy and makes you feel like you're eating at somebody's home. I have been coming here for the past 5 years and the food has stayed consistently delicious.

Yelp review, December 2023

This place is a staple of Koreatown. It has been around for decades. They are really known for their fish dishes like eundaegu jorim and imyunsu gui and obviously their kkakdoogee, the radish kimchi. They give a lot of banchan.
